I think that fundamentaly Doctors are people.
They need money as much as the next people.
Many Doctors come to work in Australia

I guess they realize that they will get paid more
Whose fault is this? Is it the fault of the West, that African countries are failing and that African “doctors” - many of them will do almost any thing to leave these countries?

From some of the recent research that is going on here at the Center for Global Development, there may be a urban-rural dynamic to the brain drain issue that has yet to be explored. It is often the rural African villages that are the most underserved by medical professionals, and therefore the rural health systems that are weakest. Part of the challenge, therefore, is not just retaining health professionals, but achieving a more equitable distribution of the existing professionals between urban and rural hospitals and clinics.

Part of the problem is that Africans themselves are to blame, yet want to blame others for their own failure. There are many African "doctors" who will lie, steal, and Cheat and decieve their way out of their own countries, to come to the USA. Whose fault is this? Is it the fault of the West, that African countries are failing and that African "doctors" - many of them will do almost any thing to leave these countries?

What we are encouarge to do is to call the most deceitful, persons being part of the brain "drain".

I think people would buy the idea. Some would use it because of the principle behind it, and some because it is a little less than Western Union. And it is possible. I know the Somali community in the UK, for example, does not use Western Union. They have their own efficient, profit making service.

Here's an idea, Ndesanjo - what if we founded a remittance service that charged a little less than Western Union and dedicated a small portion of each remittance towards community development programs. Do you think people would make the decision to go with a nonprofit remittance company over Western Union if there were a social benefit to the change?

I think one of the problems of the economic contributions of the diaspora to Africa (and western union??) is that a lot of money is sent to individuals and families, which is not a bad thing at all. But if the money were sent to build and strengthen local capacity in areas of science and technology, research, innovation, governance, manufacturing, sports, business, etc., things would be a bit different today.

[...] My second set of concerns has to do with my contention that Lakoff’s focus is more tactical than substantial. He was very careful to state that people were misinterpreting him when they asked for slogans to sell existing policies - his point is that we need to communicate our deep frame, our progressive values, rather than just selling policies. But while I’m much more comfortable with the progressive value frame over the conservative value frame, I’m not convinced that either camp has the right answers to complex questions like the ones raised in my previous post (How do we help Africa simultaneously develop economically while maintaining a functioning health system, and address the issue of a nursing and doctor shortage in rural America?)
