[...] No sooner did I start my homework assignment from Ethan (I began researching the context of the recent struggles in the Democratic Republic of Congo and how refugees from the Rwandan Genocide sparked the strife a few years back), he goes and drops an incredibly easy to digest post (maps really help) on the current troubles in Somalia. Tags: Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethan Zuckerman, Rwanda, Somalia. [...]

Thanks, Hans - that's a useful point. The Israel/Lebanon situation is demanding enough attention to crowd out Israel/Gaza as well.

But Israel in the media is ironically a problem for Gaza, too, as Helena Cobban writes:
in July, according to this report from B'Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories,

the Israeli military killed 163 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, 78 of whom (48 percent) were not taking part in the hostilities when they were killed. Thirty-six of the fatalities were minors, and 20 were women. [Meanwhile,] In the West Bank , 15 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in July.

I think you might still be suffering some OMCD aftereffects, Mary. Congo is one of the most mineral-rich nations on the planet and it has significant oil wealth. Oil doesn't drive news coverage as much as we might think - the undercoverage of Nigeria, Chad and Sudan help emphasise this point. And if terror were the major driver of news, we'd expect to see continued breathless coverage of the Mumbai bombings, which faded from media view surprisingly fast. Or proactive coverage of the rise of the Union of Islamic Courts in Somalia. I fear there's something else, something larger, at work in overcoverage of the Middle East situation. But I agree that getting people to cover Central Africa primarily requires people to focus on empathy rather than economics in simplest terms.

Thanks for the useful re-focus. I myself am guilty of OMCD (Obsessive Middle-East Conflict Disorder). You didn't mention that our well-being in the US is more closely tied with that of the Middle East (oil, terrorism) than with the fate of most African nations. Our connection to them is mostly as fellow human beings who are often suffering and that doesn't factor very much into the bottom line of rich-world news agencies.

[...] Ethan Zuckerman, who for some misguided reason I’ve only just started reading regularly: I mourn the deaths of everyone killed on both sides of the current conflict in the Middle East and I pray for a speedy end to the conflict, followed by negotiations that lead to progress, not a resumption of conflict. But I also pray that elections go smoothly in Congo, that they augur progress towards stability… and that somebody outside of Africa notices. [...]
