They&#039;re &quot;associate memberships&quot; which eliminates the possible threat of having a bunch of people join and vote to license the FSF&#039;s valuable copyrights in a non-FSF way.  It&#039;s common for environmental organizations to have &quot;supporters&quot; (not members) and of course there&#039;s a parallel in Google&#039;s two-class stock system.</description>
