Visit Ghana Cafe in Washington, DC for the Ghanaian cuisine you had on street of Accra plus fun, club beer, star, gulder, palm wine, etc. any time you're back in the US. You'll have all these under one roof. See ya. See the website:www.ghanacafe.com for yourself!

Great summary post. I haven't been back to Accra for a couple years now, but I would note, that, as restaraunt food, omo tuo in Accra is a Sunday thing.
Also, if you're there for longer, you'll quickyly realize that, beyond fabulous Ghanaian food, there's some of the best Indian and Lebanese food I've ever had in Accra.

Great post :) Wish I had read it when we first arrived in Accra 8 months ago. Now we're back home (Canada) but in our time there we kept a blog on our experience. My mother-in-law came to visit us in Accra so we wrote a post introducing her to the many things she'd encounter: http://robandmarta.blogspot.com/2006/11/powerful-jesus-ventures-video-rental.html

An update on hotels:
Mahogany Lodge and Dutch Hotel Nsonaa are less expensive than either Labadi or LaPalm and have much higher Western standards, that includes facilities and customer service. I can vouch personally for Dutch Hotel, good standards, great service and excellent food especially local cuisine.

Second, third and fourth Marie Tante Marie in Labone. Excellent! Also Country Kitchen got a facelift and is even better (the food was always good) and for good Chinese or Indian try Noble House restaurant in Osu.

Ethan (and all),

There is a four table cafe just north of the Aviation Bypass/Gifford intersection serving all-things vegetarian, including Omo Tuo. Menu varies daily. Get there before 5pm though.

The British Council, across from Cedi House is affordable and tummy safe so far.

Also, Asasse-Pa on Ring Road near Busy Internet has decent salads.

Wow, what an honor to be indirectly plugged on your blog. I'm certainly no authority on anything Ghana though, but if you can filter though all my western perspective BS, perhaps there are some nuggets.

Excellent post Ethan!

For the omo tuo, Antonio plaza is in Zoti ( between Lartebiokorshie and Korle Bu), off Link Road ( the Radio Gold road. I know you're no stranger to directions in Ghana, so you can just ask people around for the location when you're in the area.

I can chip in on the nightlife a bit:
Afrodisiac: this is in the Airport Residential Area

Boomerang: popularly 'Boom'. Recently got a new lease on life after a renovation. It is at Caprice, off from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The Office: Tends to be more of an expat crowd, in Labone

Champs: Sports bar in the Paloma complex. Also tends to be an expat hangout, so much so that it is easy to forget you're in Accra. Great place to catch football games though, and fun karaoke.

Warehouse: This is in Adabraka, and is a good place to go for hiplife and other Ghanaian music.

Celsbridge: at Labone, really not much more than a 'drinking spot', but popularised by the 20-something crowd. Good khebabs.

also Tantra, Neighbourhood

On the topic of food, Auntie Muni's waakye at Labone Junction is legendary, but from reports that a few people have been ill, perhaps not for the uninitiated stomach.

Also, I have to second the recommendation of Maquis Tante Marie ( http://www.maquistantemarie.com). Excellent food, I highly recommend their banku and tilapia. The bissap is also pretty good

A slight correction. Ever since the bird flu business and the scare that came (was it last year?) when it was found that there were cases of bird flu in Nigeria, there was a noticeable decrease in chicken consumption in Ghana as people started hedging their bets.

All this just a long-winded way of saying that Papaye now also serves fish.

Supply meets demand and all that.
