Joy, "deceptive" wasn't meant as an accusation. Chris is someone I deeply admire, and is a good friend. What I meant was that it's easy to get a picture of Chris as one thing - a comedian, for example - and then have him turn tables and surprise you with another of his facets. This talk was a good example of this - he had us laughing, then had us gasping or crying moments later. Wasn't meant in any way to be disrespectful or accusatory.

I would also note - this is from a series of posts written in real-time during a four day long conference. If the wording is imprecise... that's par for the course with liveblogging.

Ethan:
Why do you describe Albani as deceptive in your first paragraph and give no explanation for such a charge?
Is that a typo?
Did you mean "perceptive"?

I've been meaning to read Chris Abani -- I remember reading a review of one of his books in the Times book review. I love the gangsta rapper at a bar mitzvah line -- and oh, man, that Komunyakaa poem! ::swoon::
