    That is a classic article by Paul Graham, I would encourage others who read this to check out the rest of his article. He is a very good writer.

    Ethan, that Paul Graham essay is wonderful. I could not agree more. My only minor quibble is that he should have made a distinction between income and wealth. In the end notes he does make a brief reference, though. Thanks.

    I’m amazed at how exceptionally ill-informed the Paul Graham article is about the actual causes and effects of inequality. Empirical research shows that class mobility is decreasing and that most people who end up wealthy started out wealthy. Moreover, inequality itself can lead to shorter life expectancies, even at absolute higher levels of wealth. There are simply too many mistakes in this article to address them all here. I urge you to read some Amartya Sen and Paul Krugman as an antidote. Some additional links on my wiki.
