[...] …And then I stumbled upon a post that Tim O’Reily wrote a few months ago: "Facebook, the Quant Fund Meltdown, and the Techmeme Leaderboard", in which he suggested that the discourse in tech blogosphere is slowly degenerating, under the pressure of buzz aggregators like TechMeme and specifically its Leaderboard. What O’Reily stated wasn’t really a big secret: the surest way to be on the front page of TechMeme and thus part of the Leaderboard is to comment on existing stories, so the discourse on tech blogs quickly becomes self-referential, rarely looking outside of the mainstream tech subjects — hence, enormous amount of time spent on discussing Scoble’s Facebook problems as opposed to Kenya’s crisis, something that Ethan captured very nicely with his post).
Ethan, I will add that one of the Pyramid of Peace leaders in Kenya is Dennis Kimbambo of REPACTED who recently one a Rising Voices microgrant. http://wiki.rising.globalvoicesonline.org/REPACTED

Dennis leads community theater projects in which people can discuss different approaches to matters such as AIDS. Yesterday he entertained refugee children for six hours. Here is his letter:

This Crisis is here to stay for sometime unless something is done at the national level, the president is fuelling more anger by naming a cabinet while the mediator (Ghanaian president Kuffor) is in the country for talks and mediation, the insistence of the government pokes person that e don’t need mediation is not helping matters at all.

Away from that I think what we are doing at the grass root level is reaching far more people than I thought, the idea of credit being shared has helped many and some of them are even getting more of the friends talking and discussing issues that are serious in preventing deaths, Collins Oduor and Charles Kilel have made serious advances into the affected areas (not that we have not all made advance) but they have been able to reach those guys who are fighting on the ground. I have just sent more airtime to Kilel I talked to one of the person he has sent credit too and they were talking about the situation as it was this morning where some trouble had started after Kibaki named his cabinet the youths there are removing the road blocks but are staying very close to the highways as they have discovered a new way of making money from the motorists.

There is hope for this young people now and the violence will reduce at least in this group that this young man has been reaching. Collins has been reaching out to another group in Kilelwet and he will be meeting them at some point, they move to Kuresoi (which has been volatile even before elections)to cause havoc there, a group that we should be reaching out to is the Pokot who from what I have been hearing from the youths are causing more harm than any other group, whoever has contact for them I will be happy to involve them am still trying to reach out to them also.

Wesley am going to call you with a contact of a person who can get you nutritious food supply, I a not able to give you money for transport at this time but hope to be able to get some to you when we have more, about the children games I will advice that you get a theatre group there and involve them in fun games we did the same here in Nakuru and it worked very well for us. I urge you guys to give feedback to the forum about what progress you have been making so far.

I have just sent money to
Grace Soi 5000
Charles Kilel 7000
I have about 350$ remaining let me put down all the transactions he am sending pics
Am sending more to young people in affetcted (about 15) areas now for messages of peace with there peers the reason is some of this young people know the people whow are fighting and causing trouble.

Ethan, Our Minciu Sodas laboratory http://www.ms.lt is very active in Kenya and we have succeeded in distributing funds as mobile phone credits which are sent to vulnerable, helpful, frustrated people and especially to engage enemies in our Pyramid of Peace.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holistichelping/message/1702

I ask your help that bloggers might connect with our Kenyans on the ground.
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?KenyansToCall
We will try to do this on a geographical basis and develop a system so people around the world can help directly as we are in Eldoret: http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Eldoret

Here's an example of how we helped Jackton Arija whose family ran out of food:

Thu Jan 3, 2008 8:22 am (Yahoo time?) "Thank you all for your concern about Kenya, a lot is happenning here and many and many people have lost their lives. As Sam has said there is no food,no transport and no money and medication.Right now as speak we dont have food and i am just in the house with my kids boiling hot water and putting some remaining sugar on
it for the kids."

Fri Jan 4, 2008 8:43 am: "Right now i am in Homa-bay with my family and things are very bad here,i just sneaked to come and look if there is any email.Everybody in Homa-bay are in house, there is no food and even if you get it the prices are doubled.I dont even have air time to call Sam yesterday.Five people died yesterday after riots this side."

Sun Jan 6, 2008 6:29 am: "I thank you all making all efforts for me to have food in my house,Ken Owino sent airtime oh Ksh 1500 and Dennis also snet me and airtime of ksh750.I managed to sell and use to buy food in my house and my neighbour who was also lacking food.I called Sam to let him know that i am now ok with my family."

Its about time someone said this. I think it just characterizes the parochialism of many people in the west. People are selfish. Only care about what affects them. A sad state of affairs.
