I remember writing a paper about the Bayaka and Song from the Forest in high school, but it's been a long time since I thought about it. Thanks :)

By the way, we use a very high profile third-party (commercial) database that converts IP addresses to latitude and longitude. There are generally two possible sources of inaccuracy, as we explain on our FAQ pages: (i) the IP might not be recognized by the IP -> geo-location translator or even mapped wrongly; and (ii) in the case of dial-up connections, the Internet Service Provider may have registered a large set of IPs and the ISP itself can be a company based in a different location from that of the actual 'end user'. However, for most IPs the translation works extremely reliably. We also update our IP -> geo-location database every few months to ensure its accuracy. Nevertheless, for certain locations the mapping may be more 'fragile' than others!

Interesting indeed. However I think it must be a cluster-map thing. When I was there seven years ago I was delighted to find an internet café in Bangui and one of the totally unexpected joys of the trip was getting a picture of my one-year-old in the bath. Mobile phone coverage, even then, was more impressive than I'd expected. But the extraordinary grinding poverty was not. Nor was the continuing curse of French foreign policy. I sometimes wonder why the Quai d'Orsay hasn't been taken to the Hague. And then I don't.

Hi Ethan - fascinating stuff... just wanted to add on behalf of the ClustrMaps Team that although your map will is due for 'automatic archiving' very soon (which will 'clear the clutter', while keeping the grand totals intact), all the old maps will still be accessible from the 'Maps archive' link on your world map page at http://clustrmaps.com/counter/maps.php?url=http://ethanzuckerman.com/blog

If that's too awkward or indirect, you can always put in an image of the 'old map' nearby the 'current map'... let us know if we can assist in any way...

Best wishes for your projects!
