I think I finally understand why I'm in the business that I am -- post-Tripod, I turned to the only subject matter guaranteed to out-sell cute cat photos!

And I agree, I never quite understood why Web 2.0 blogging was considered so revolutionary when our members had been doing it back in the early 90s.

I believe I said that your smart, funny, edgy and brilliant writing was less popular than cat photos. The numbers don't lie, Josh... though I suppose the geeks wielding them might. :-)

[...] …My heart’s in Accra » An elegy (of sorts) for Geocities Two interesting questions arise for me from the death of Geocities. One is whether ad supported, user-generated content models will ever be viable. …We couldn’t make targeted advertising work with text analysis on Tripod, and Buley speculates that Facebook won’t be able to do it with careful demographic targetting on Facebook. My guess is that models that offer free services and upsell premium memberships, like Flickr, are a lot more viable in the long term than hosting companies that focus purely on ad inventory.
