Great article. I had the same experience with Technorati, as it got glitzier it dropped out of my life, becoming less and less useful.

Another problem I noticed with Technorati was something like link spamming -- groups of people cross linking to each to inflate their Technorati authority rating. It irked me that I could be linked from thousands of websites, but my authority could never rise. Meanwhile on Technorati my authority was usually near ESWNs, but his daily traffic was like a couple of good months for me. The whole authority system made no sense at all.

I still use the Technorati tags but seldom visit the site, it is practically useless if you want to actually know something about the state of blogging in X.

The ping server issue is a severe one -- the former blog project manager for Yam.com here once said that if the pingserver issue were resolved all the world's most popular blogs would be Chinese.

I would second Blake Rhodes suggestion. In fact, the only blog search I do now is via Icerocket. Specifically its Big Buzz.

Thank goodness for Global Voices! Really. I find it hugely helpful for finding blogs and inspiration from other parts of the world. I know many others do too.

We come up frequently against the assumption that what goes on outside the Anglophone world - and Western Europe to a lesser extent - is somehow irrelevant, and I think Technorati’s refocus just reflects this. I can understand that advertisers need a targeted demographic but I think there is another aspect too. It’s almost as if an article on Italy written by a North American is considered to be more reliable than one written by an Italian, for example. Even more so for other countries. What do you think?

Ethan,

I do hope Technorati makes a comeback, but I must say that it entirely disappeared from relevance when I moved out to Asia.

Not only - horror of horrors - did my Technorati authority drop like a lead balloon, but it does not pick up on many of the most interesting conversations in Asia.

Fortunately there's a site called "Global Voices" to help find interesting stuff is happening. Check it out!

I am close to giving up on technorati. Past the lack of traffic from the site to mine, its widgets are a joke. On my blog is stays I have 103 authority, but on the technorati site about my blog, I'm at 603.

Nice that it tells me I am at 1272 (just behind you) but I just don't see its relevance anymore.
