whether Rick Warren supports or condems the bill doesnt change the fact that God,s will for a marriege is between a man and a woman.Rick is not our Universal moral standard. the word of God is our moral standard.

Catherine, I think the question you’re asking about the appeal of politically conservative religious messages in the developing world is a fascinating one. When I moved to Ghana for the first time in 1993, I hoped I’d find an African version of the Latin American-rooted liberation theology I was reading in university. Instead, Ghana was in the early phases of a pentacostal and evangelical revival, the beginnings of the “prosperity churches” movement that’s become so common in West Africa these days. Those churches tend to focus very litte on systematic political change, and quite heavily on conservative values.

I think Reverend Kaoma’s answer would be that the conservative evangelists have been more succesful in shaping a message that aligns with traditional African family and community values than the more liberal evangelists. But I agree with you – it seems strangely disempowering to put that much of the transformation in the hands of missionary preachers. Unfortunately, I don’t know who’s writing on the topic – would love to hear more if anyone has references to share.
