EZ, this is interesting to think about in the context of the translation exchange. If that ratio is true for most stories - and I suspect it is, given what we know about reporting practice and the declining number of international correspondents - then the quality translation and recontexualization of original content in other languages could have a large effect on the ratio of original stories. It would be interesting to study a larger sample of stories over time; if there's anything like an average of 10 original stories per news event, then adding 2-3 from other language stories is significant and powerful. Definitely worth the research.
