  1. Robbie Honerkamp says:

I used to subscribe to GlobeCast back when they had AIT (from Nigeria) as a pay channel. The satellite GlobeCast uses (Galaxy 19) has quite a few free channels on it, and you can use any FTA receiver to get them (in other words, you don’t have to buy a GlobeCast receiver and smart card unless you want to get one of their pay channels).

http://www.lyngsat.com/galaxy19.html has a full listing of what’s on G19. There’s lots of religious channels, but for Africawatchers there’s NTA (government TV) and Emmanuel TV (Channel from a Nigerian “healer” who claims to be able to cure AIDS) from Nigeria, as well as channels from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya.

I didn’t see them listed, but in the past I’ve seen channels from Ethiopia and Senegal. I could be confusing satellites, though. I’ve never seen any channels from Ghana broadcast in the open on any satellite, which seems odd to me.

Aside from Al Jazeera, Iran’s English language news channel Press TV is also there.

If you can’t tell, I sometimes like to cruise through the satellites and see what’s out there.
