Happy to see Steven coming back around to the emergent/extreme democracy thinking we were into leading up to, and following, the Dean campaign, and partly driven by Joi’s concerns about democracy in Japan as well as globally. Democracy and participatory politics are difficult concepts, and movement around them must be complex, nuanced, and very flexible. Scale is certainly the most prominent of many issues; the Internet has shown us that read/write democratization can increase the ratio of noise to signal and can be exploited, among other down sides. These are wicked problems but we don’t help ourselves by avoiding them – we need a sustained conversation and persistent response to the challenge.
