There’s a similar move in rhetorical studies that argues for the importance of ordinary democracy, which focuses on more local forms of civic engagement (and can show us how democracy actually plays out).

Quick note to Tosin, cold media are low in content, high in participation for McLuhan, whereas hot media are high in content, low in participation. It’s a great comparison though, as McLuhan also saw these more as a continuum rather than a binary as well.
