The problem is that no one believes in natural monopolies anymore.

Do many of your neighbors have this problem? Can you do line of sight to some communications infrastructure in town? A number of remote places get internet service using a microwave link. (The latest hack in that community involves using drones to get signal strengths at tree top height without having to climb trees.) This isn’t easy, but it’s not a lot harder than debugging satellite.

P.S. Good luck. Pray for cable.

Then you have Williamstown with fiber in the basement of the library that doesn’t get used because they have a deal with Time Warner.

So there’s no chance to switch from satellite at all.

I can’t even get to above a level one guy in India with my female voice. I have to wait until my husband gets home and have him read the questions I have written out for him.

I am a former Unix sysadmin and can’t get taken seriously enough to get real service. My husband can get a level 3 troubleshooter just by reading my questions in a male voice.

I thought it was just me, but I a friend (a UC Berkeley CS grad working for Oracle at the time) could not get an IT guy in India to escalate her help call. She was working in the office of another female CS at Oracle. They spent 1.5 hours trying to get the right network troubleshooter. 3 hours of software engineer time wasted because of sexism!

The janitor came in to take out their trash. They had him read their description of the problem and troubleshooting steps already taken. They got the call escalated and solved.

Men and women experience the internet and IT customer service in very different ways. My blood pressure shot up just from typing and reliving this.

Rather, this is a failure of the transition away from regulated monopolies.
